Should Exams Be Abolished? A Debate

Ladies and gentlemen,

I speak for the motion. The motion of the House is “Exams should be abolished.”

Should exams be abolished? My answer to this is a strong “Yes.” I shall now express my humble views on the aforesaid motion before this august House.

The examination system is a time-tested, but faulty method of evaluation in practice from ancient times. In recent times it has had numerous unpleasant ramifications which may not be overlooked. Although it does have a few advantages that have been mentioned by my worthy opponents, there are very serious faults at the roots of the system. A few observations that I would like to put forward for all to consider are:

    1. There are often fewer seats than aspirants in today’s jet-set world – sometimes even a hundred eligible candidates per seat. Although one will eventually benefit, only this system of exams is responsible for the sorrow, tears and anguish of the other ninety-nine.
    2. A students with merit and potential may do badly in exams due to pressure or ridicule due to social stigmas or other unavoidable circumstances. This can be a fatal blow to a bright career.
